Before every trip, a simple question occupies everyone’s mind: “How much will gas cost me for this route?” The exact answer depends on just three numbers: distance, car fuel consumption, and fuel price. With the calculator at the top of the page, you can enter these three numbers and see the result instantly.
How is fuel cost calculated?
If you use metric units:
Fuel consumption (liters) = distance (kilometers) × consumption (liters per 100 kilometers) ÷ 100And in the American system:
Fuel consumption (gallons) = distance (miles) ÷ MPGIn both cases, the final cost is equal to the fuel consumed × the price per unit of fuel.
Practical example
A 300-kilometer trip in a car that consumes 8 liters per 100 kilometers requires 24 liters of fuel. If the price per liter is $ 1.50, the cost of the trip is $ 36. If it is a round trip, this number is $ 72. With four passengers, each person will only pay $ 18.

Estimate what a trip or daily commute will cost you in fuel.
Estimates only. Real-world fuel economy varies with speed, load, weather and driving style.

Real fuel consumption differs from the factory number
The fuel consumption figure that the manufacturer declares is measured in laboratory conditions. On the road, it is usually 10 to 25 percent higher. For the calculator to give a more realistic result, it is better to calculate your actual consumption: fill the tank, reset the odometer and fill it again after a few days. Divide the amount of fuel that entered the tank by the distance traveled.
7 real ways to reduce fuel costs
- Control the tire pressure. Underinflated tires increase consumption. (Here is a link to the article "Tire Size Guide")
- Drive smoother. Sudden acceleration and braking are one of the biggest reasons for high consumption.
- Steady and balanced speed. At very high speeds, air resistance increases consumption significantly.
- Remove excess cargo from the car. Any extra weight means more consumption.
- Unfasten the roof rack when it is not necessary. An empty roof rack also makes the air more resistant.
- Perform periodic service. The air filter keeps the consumption low, spark plugs and proper oil.
- Use the air conditioner wisely. At low speeds, the windows are open, and at high speeds, the air conditioner is usually more economical.
Units and Conversions:
1 US gallon ≈ 3.785 liters
1 mile ≈ 1.609 kilometers
To convert MPG to liters per 100 kilometers: 235.2 ÷ MPGFAQs
How is the fuel cost of a trip calculated?
Multiply the distance by the car's fuel consumption and multiply by the fuel price. The calculator at the top of the page does this automatically.
Does the calculator show the actual consumption?
The result depends on the number you enter. For greater accuracy, calculate and enter your car's actual consumption.
How do I measure my car's fuel consumption?
Fill the tank, reset the kilometers to zero, and fill the tank again after a few days. Divide the amount of fuel by the distance.
What is the difference between L/100km and MPG?
L/100km means liters consumed per 100 kilometers (a lower number is better). MPG stands for miles per gallon (higher is better).
Can I calculate the cost of a round trip?
Yes, check the “Round trip” option to double the distance.
Fuel costs can be predicted with three simple numbers. Try the calculator before each trip, and if you know your car’s actual fuel consumption, the results will be much more accurate. Check out the rest of the site’s tools to see the full cost of owning a car.
